Some Frequently Asked Questions...

How does wool work?

These covers are easy to care for and waterproof with natural lanolin oil direct from the body of sheep. When a wool cover gets lanolized, aka. soaks in a lanolin bath and dries, it becomes waterproof. The natural lanolin oil from sheep coat the wool fibers making them become more absorbent. A lanolized wool cover can absorb up to 30% its weight in liquid. When the cover gets damp, it's time to hang dry it until next butt change. For nighttime use, use with a fitted and an extra absorber like a hemp doubler and the cover itself also absorbs some liquid. It is best to use a heavy weight wool or nighttime/winter wool for bedtime, since they have thicker fibers to absorb more than a light weight or summer weight wool.

Isn't wool hotter?

No, since wool is a natural fiber, it breathes very well keeping keeps your baby at a nice temperature.

How do you lanolize?

The lanolizing process is quite simple. We love using Scarlet's Naturals Wool Wash that has lanolin in it to lanolize our wool. It seems to work best if you fill a sink or a basin with tepid water and mix in 1 tbsp of Scarlet's Wool Wash. After it is well mixed, immerse the wool and gently massage it for a minute or two, working to make sure the entire cover is saturated. Allow wool to soak. We have done as short as 20 minutes and as long as overnight and didn't seem to see a huge difference. After it has soaked, gently squeeze excess water out and lay on a bath towel. Fold towel over cover and gently roll up towel and then apply pressure to get remaining moisture. We tend to roll the towel twice until no visible moisture can be seen. We then like to ensure that the soaker area is well lanolized by spraying and rubbing in Scarlet's Lanolin Spray, we spray and gently massage in evenly the lanolin. Then lay flat to dry overnight on a drying rack or something that allows circulation around the cover, so it will dry evenly and quickly. You can also choose to laonlize with lanolin oil or conditioner, the only variation is that you will need to heat up the lanolin before pouring into tepid water before soaking the wool.

How often do I need to wash?

A wool cover or soaker needs to be washed every 2-4 weeks or if ever it gets soiled. The lanolin oil in the wool will self clean when it gets wet, but overtime it will wear away and need to be relanolized. You can also touch up your wool lanolinization with Scarlet's Lanolin Spray.

How many covers will I need?

If you are going to use wool full time you will need at three covers to get started. This allows you to let one dry between diaper changes and an extra in case one gets soiled. We recommend getting at least 1 winter/night weight and 1 lighter summer/day weight, but you may choose to get all three in a night weight.
If you are going to just do wool at night or as a nighttime solution, we recommend getting two winter/night weight wool covers, so you have an extra on hand in case one should get soiled and need washed.
