Our wool nursing pads are made from two layers of the finest and softest Oeko Tex 100 certified Merino Wool. They are larger than our Cotton and Hemp nursing pads at 5″ across. Wool is highly absorbent and is naturally breathable so it is an excellent fabric for nursing pads. It does not need to be washed with each use. Simply lay flat to airdry, while it airdries, the lanolin will act as a natural soap and cleanse the nursing pad. When it is dry, it is ready to use again.
How many do I need?
If your nursing pads are wet everytime you nurse your new baby, then you will need more at the beginning, but as your milk evens out, you will need less. It will be different for every woman, but in my personal experience, since I had a fast let down and needed to change pads at every nursing in the beginning with both children. I went through 8 changes a day. With wool I had four sets in rotation. I had one set that was always dry and ready for overnight, which seemed to be when I would let down the most. As my babies aged, I was able to reduce the amount of changes to four times or less a day, so two pairs would have last me all day.
To draw from my experience we would recommend:
|0-6 months||6-12 months||12-24 months|
|Heavy Let Down||4||2||1|
|Mild Let Down||2||1||0|
We recommend lanolizing them once every 2-4 weeks, depending on the amount of let down you have. For heavy, every 2 weeks and for mild 3-4 weeks. If you notice your nursing pad is leaking through to your bra or shirt, then it is time to lanolize or do a touch up with Scarlet's Lanolin Spray.
